What to Pay Attention to After Implant Placement

12.06.2026

In this video, our Klinik99 specialists provide information about What to Pay Attention to After Implant Placement.

The video is narrated in Turkish; you can turn on automatic English captions in the video settings.

Hello everyone! Today I will tell you about the process after the stage of "I had the implant placed, I went home, I dealt with the pain" (we talked about swelling in the previous video). Now let's talk about this: "How will I take care of it, how will cleaning be, when will I brush my teeth, when will I use mouthwash and what will I eat and drink?"

First of all, we wait for the effect of the local anesthesia we applied during the procedure to wear off. This varies from person to person, but generally it has completely worn off between 4 and 6 hours.

Nutrition After the Effect of the Anesthesia Wears Off
After the effect of the anesthesia wears off, we can have warm, soft soups with no grains. Even if we have no pain, we should try to eat soft, warm foods with no grains for 1 week.

Generally my patients' comfort returns to normal on the 3rd day. But after the 3rd day, patients start eating grainy, hot and hard things. This comes back to me with the complaint, "At first I didn't have much pain, then after the 3rd day I started having pain." When I examine the treatment area, I may find food debris and hard foods in that area, or I may see irritation in the soft tissue. Sometimes I also witness that the suture, that is, the stitch thread there, has torn. For this reason it is very important to follow the 1-week eating and drinking rules.

Tooth Brushing and Mouthwash Use
We can brush our teeth the same day but the important point here is that after brushing, we should absolutely not spit out the liquid left in the mouth. You should let the water go slowly and flow out of your chin. We absolutely do not recommend spitting for 1 week.

Why Don't We Spit?
Spitting disrupts wound healing. Along with this, it can cause pain, sensitivity, delay in wound healing and bleeding that does not stop.

In our daily morning-evening routine, I recommend using post-operative toothbrushes. Although it varies from brand to brand, you can generally brush your teeth with 12,000-bristle, small-headed toothbrushes and let the liquids flow slowly out of your mouth (without spitting).

Depending on the type of mouthwash prescribed, I do not recommend mouthwash for the first 48 hours. After 48 hours I have them rinse for 30 seconds and again I tell them to let it flow slowly out of the chin. Look, again, no spitting!

Other Rules to Pay Attention To
Just as we do not spit, there is also no straw use. Because the positive and negative pressure imbalances that would occur in the mouth negatively affect the wound area, we do not use straws. Likewise, for the healing process, we absolutely do not recommend smoking for 2 weeks after the operation.

Before I finish my video, let me touch on a few more small points and finish like that:

Use of Gauze: The gauze placed after the procedure will stay in the mouth for half an hour. After the time is up and you remove the gauze, there is no need to put in a new one.

Avoiding Heat: Let's not lie in the sun, and let's absolutely not go to the hammam or sauna.

Showering: Let's not take a hot shower on the day of the procedure and the day after.
