Zirconia Dental Crowns

Strong, natural-looking metal-free zirconia crowns to restore broken, decayed or worn teeth.

What Is a Zirconia Crown?

A zirconia crown is a full-coverage crown made from zirconia, a high-strength ceramic material. Unlike older metal-supported porcelain crowns, it contains no metal. As a result there is no dark line at the gum margin, light passes through it more naturally, and it is an option for people with metal allergies.

When Is It Recommended?

  • Teeth weakened by large fillings or decay
  • Teeth that have had root canal treatment and have lost strength
  • Broken or severely worn teeth
  • Bridges to replace missing teeth
  • Fixed prostheses on dental implants
  • Teeth whose shape and colour are to be renewed for aesthetic reasons

Treatment Steps

Examination and planning: The tooth and surrounding tissues are assessed with an X-ray. If there is gum inflammation it is treated first, because healthy gums are the basis of a long-lasting crown.

Tooth preparation: Under local anaesthesia, enough tooth structure is shaped around the tooth to make room for the crown. No pain is felt during the procedure.

Impression and shade selection: An impression is taken and a shade matching the neighbouring teeth is chosen. A temporary crown can be placed in the meantime.

Bonding: The zirconia crown made in the laboratory is tried in, the bite is adjusted and it is cemented permanently.

How Long Does a Zirconia Crown Last?

Zirconia is resistant to chewing forces. However, the lifespan of a crown depends not only on the material but also on the health of the tooth underneath, the surrounding gums, oral hygiene and any clenching habit. Cleaning the crown margin with floss or interdental brushes, regular check-ups and, when needed, a night guard are recommended.

Zirconia vs. Veneers

Zirconia surrounds the whole tooth and needs more preparation; a veneer covers only the front surface and needs less reduction. The current condition of the tooth decides which is suitable. See our pages on porcelain veneers, prosthetic treatment and root canal treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a zirconia crown painful?
The procedure is done under local anaesthesia and pain is not expected. Mild sensitivity for a few days after the anaesthesia wears off can occur.
Does zirconia matter for metal allergy?
Zirconia contains no metal, so it is an option for people with metal allergies. Please tell us about any allergy at the examination.
Can a crown break or come off?
Rarely, a crown can break or loosen; the risk rises with biting hard objects, clenching and poor hygiene. Regular check-ups reduce it.
How many visits does it take?
Usually a few appointments: examination, preparation and impression, then bonding. The exact timeline depends on the condition of the tooth.
