Porcelain Veneers

Thin porcelain shells that correct colour, shape and small gaps in the front teeth for a natural-looking, personalised smile.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin porcelain or ceramic shells, roughly the thickness of a fingernail tip, bonded to the visible surface of the front teeth. Unlike a full crown they do not wrap around the whole tooth and often need very little or no tooth reduction. This makes them a good option for people with healthy teeth who want to change their smile while keeping as much natural tooth as possible.

When Are Veneers Used?

  • Lasting discolouration that whitening cannot correct
  • Small gaps between the front teeth
  • Slightly chipped, worn or short-looking teeth
  • Differences in tooth size and shape
  • Mild crowding that does not require orthodontic treatment

Every smile is different. If there is not enough enamel, severe crowding, a clenching habit or uncontrolled gum disease, veneers may not be the first choice. The decision is made after an examination and impressions or photographs.

How Does the Treatment Work?

1. Examination and planning: Your teeth, gums and bite are assessed and your expectations are discussed. If needed, gum treatment or whitening is planned first.

2. Trial: Before anything permanent is done, a trial of the planned look can be placed in your mouth so you can see the result and share changes you would like.

3. Preparation and impression: If required, the tooth surface is slightly thinned, an impression is taken and the veneers are made in the laboratory.

4. Bonding: The veneers are bonded with a special adhesive and your bite is checked. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia, so pain is not expected.

How Long Do Veneers Last and How Do You Care for Them?

With regular care veneers can last many years; their lifespan depends on oral hygiene, any clenching habit and how often you attend check-ups. Keep brushing and flossing daily, avoid biting hard objects (pen tips, nails, ice), and if you clench or grind your teeth a night guard may be recommended. The health of the gums around the veneer is one of the most important factors for a long-lasting result, so regular check-ups and professional cleaning matter.

Veneers or Zirconia?

Both are used for aesthetic work, but a veneer covers only the front surface while zirconia is a stronger restoration that surrounds the tooth. Which one suits you depends on the current condition of the tooth. See our pages on zirconia crowns and aesthetic dentistry for more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do veneers damage the teeth?
Veneers are usually placed with very little tooth reduction, and sometimes none. Because going back can be limited afterwards, the decision is made after an examination, discussing the advantages and limits.
Do veneers change colour?
Porcelain and ceramic surfaces are much less affected by tea, coffee and similar substances than natural enamel. The gums and natural tooth structure around the veneer still need regular care.
How many visits does it take?
It depends on the plan; usually the examination, trial, impression and bonding are spread over several appointments. The exact timeline is set at the examination.
Can everyone have veneers?
No. If there is clenching, insufficient enamel, severe crowding or active gum disease, these are addressed first; if veneers are not suitable, another option is recommended.
