What Is Tartar and Why Does It Form?
The soft layer of bacteria that brushing does not fully remove from the teeth is called plaque. If plaque is not cleaned away, it combines with minerals in saliva, hardens and becomes tartar (calculus). Tartar cannot be removed with a toothbrush or floss at home; only a dentist can remove it. When it extends below the gum line it can be an important cause of gum disease and, later, tooth loss.
How Is Scaling Done?
In this procedure, called scaling, deposits on the tooth surface and around the gum line are removed with an ultrasonic device and hand instruments. The surface is then polished, which makes it harder for plaque to attach again. Most patients do not need anaesthesia, but if the gums are sensitive or inflamed there may be brief discomfort; additional measures are taken to reduce sensitivity when needed.
When Is It Needed?
- Gums bleed when brushing or flossing
- Hard yellow-brown deposits are visible along the tooth edges
- Bad breath persists despite regular brushing
- Gums are red, swollen and tender
- A routine check-up is due (usually every six months, more often for some people)
Does Scaling Damage the Teeth?
When done with the right technique it does not harm the teeth. For a while afterwards the spaces between the teeth may feel more open; this is because tartar had been filling them. Temporary hot-cold sensitivity can occur and usually passes quickly.
Cleaning or Gum Treatment?
Simple tartar build-up can be cleaned in one visit. If there are deep pockets below the gum line, bone loss or receding gums, more extensive periodontal treatment is needed. Our clinic has a periodontology specialist, who distinguishes the need at the examination and plans the right method. See our gum treatment page for details.
What to Do at Home
Brush twice a day for at least two minutes with a soft brush and use floss or interdental brushes once a day. Smoking increases tartar formation and the risk of gum disease. Do not skip regular check-ups.
